Would you rather questions that split the room

By Bram De Greef, creator of Wrecked · Updated · 6 min read

The drinking version of Would You Rather is simple: read a question, everyone picks a side at the same time, and the smaller side drinks. Below are 40 would you rather questions written for exactly that, plus real this-or-that and debate cards from Wrecked's free Debate mode.

How to play Would You Rather as a drinking game

  1. One person reads the question.
  2. On three, everyone points: left hand for the first option, right hand for the second.
  3. The smaller side drinks. A tie means everyone drinks.
  4. Optional: one person from the losing side gets 20 seconds to convince others to switch. Anyone who switches drinks for being easily swayed. (That rule comes straight from a Wrecked Debate card.)

This-or-that and debate cards from Wrecked

Real cards from the Debate deck. The rule for who drinks is on the card.

  1. Defend the position that the group assigns you, no matter how absurd. You have 60 seconds. If even one person is swayed, assign 2 drinks. If nobody's convinced, drink 3.
  2. THIS OR THAT: Ability to talk to animals or speak every human language? Pick a side. Tied? Everyone drinks 1. Otherwise, losing side drinks 1 each, then the winning side must justify their choice, unconvincing winners also drink 1.
  3. Would you rather be famous but hated, or unknown but loved? Argue your case. Everyone who disagrees takes a drink. But if nobody disagrees, YOU drink 3 for having a boring take.
  4. SHOWDOWN: Teleportation or flying? Pick your side. Tied? Everyone drinks 1. Otherwise, losing side drinks 1, then each side picks their strongest argument in 20 seconds, group votes on best argument. Losing arguer drinks 2 more.
  5. SHOWDOWN: Summer or winter? Everyone picks a side. Minority group drinks 1 each. If it's a tie, everyone drinks.
  6. Who at this table would be the worst lawyer? Voted player must defend themselves in 30 seconds, group rules. Guilty? Drink 3.
  7. THIS OR THAT: Invisibility or time travel? Pick a side. The side with fewer people drinks 2 each.
  8. THIS OR THAT: Live in the past or the future? Pick a side. Tied? Everyone drinks 1. Otherwise, the losing side nominates a debater. The winning side nominates one too. They go head-to-head, group re-votes. Loser of the rematch drinks 3.
  9. SHOWDOWN: Pancakes or waffles? Pick your side. Tied? Everyone drinks 1. Otherwise, minority drinks 1, then the minority picks a champion to argue their case, if they flip even one person, the flipper drinks 3.
  10. BATTLE: Beach vacation or mountain getaway? Everyone picks. Tied? Everyone drinks 1 and skip the debate. Otherwise, minority side makes a 20-second case to switch people. Anyone who switches drinks 2 for being easily swayed.
  11. THIS OR THAT: Never use social media again or never watch TV/movies again? Pick a side. Minority drinks 2 each.
  12. BATTLE: Marvel or DC? Pick a side. Losing side drinks 1. Anyone who says 'I don't care about either' drinks 3 for dodging the question.
  13. Who at this table thinks they're always right? Voted player: the group gives you a wrong opinion to defend. If you can convince even one person, assign 3 drinks. If not, drink 3.
  14. Sam and Alex: Rapid-fire 'would you rather.' Take turns asking each other, first person to hesitate for more than 3 seconds drinks 2.
  15. THIS OR THAT BLITZ! Go rapid-fire around the table: cake or pie, Netflix or YouTube, texting or calling, summer or winter, city or countryside. Anyone who matches the person before them drinks 1.
  16. Sam and Alex: Co-counsel. The group gives you an impossible thing to defend (like 'Mondays are the best day'). If your combined argument convinces anyone, that person drinks 2. If nobody's convinced, both of you drink 2.

Tips for the drinking version

  • Point at the same time. If people answer one by one, they copy the room.
  • Close options only. If a question gets a unanimous answer, skip it and read the next one.
  • Let the minority argue. The drinking is the penalty, but the argument is the entertainment.
  • Mix with other games. Would You Rather is great for five minutes. Wrecked mixes debate cards with hot seat questions, most likely to votes and challenges so the night does not get repetitive.

Questions people ask

How do you play Would You Rather as a drinking game?

Read a question, count to three, and everyone points left or right for their answer at the same time. Whoever is on the smaller side drinks. If it is a tie, everyone drinks. For a twist, let one player from the minority argue their case; anyone they convince to switch drinks too.

What makes a good would you rather question?

Both options need to be close. If everyone picks the same side, nobody drinks and nobody argues. The best ones are either two good things you cannot have together, or two bad things where people genuinely disagree about which is worse.

Is Would You Rather good for large groups?

Yes. It scales well because everyone answers at once, so a round takes seconds even with 15 people.
