Why most drinking games fall flat with two

Group games rely on a crowd: votes, teams, someone to hide behind. With two players, every question is aimed straight at the other person. That is actually the fun part, as long as you pick games built for it.

1. Never Have I Ever, about each other

Instead of statements about yourself, make them about your relationship: “Never have I ever pretended to like a gift you gave me.” Drink if it is true. Grab starters from our never have I ever list.

2. Two Truths and a Lie

Say three things about yourself. If the other person picks the wrong lie, they drink. If they catch you, you drink.

3. Higher or Lower

Flip a card from a deck. The other player guesses if the next card is higher or lower. Wrong guess, drink. Switch after three right guesses in a row.

4. This or That

Rapid-fire choices (“beach or mountains?”, “texting or calling?”). Try to predict the other person’s answer before they say it. Every wrong prediction is a sip. Our would you rather questions work as well.

5. Guess My Answer

One player answers a question secretly (favorite movie, worst date, first concert). The other guesses. Wrong means drink.

6. Categories, head to head

Pick a category and alternate naming things in it. First one to blank or repeat drinks. Fast and surprisingly competitive with two.

7. Staring Contest

First to blink or laugh drinks. Best as a tiebreaker between other games.

8. Rock, Paper, Scissors, Best of Five

Loser of each set drinks. Silly, but it keeps things moving between longer games.

9. Movie or Show Drinking Game

Pick a show and a few triggers (a catchphrase, a character crying, a plot twist). Sip whenever one happens.

5. Rate Sam's patience 1–10. Sam guesses the average, off by 3 or more, drink.
6. What's a skill you've lied about having? Demonstrate it now. Can't? Drink 2.
7. If you could un-send one message, what would it be about? Refuse? Drink 3.
8. Rate Sam's cooking on a scale of microwave to Michelin star. Sam guesses, off by 2 tiers? Drink.
9. What's the most embarrassing thing in your camera roll right now? Show it or drink 3.
10. Sam must give an acceptance speech as if they just won Wrecked Player of the Year. Under 30 seconds. Bad speech? Drink.

Tips for two-player drinking games

• Sip, don’t chug. With only two of you, every penalty lands on one of you. Small sips keep it going longer.
• Switch games often. Twenty minutes per game keeps the energy up.
• Keep it kind. Questions about each other can get personal fast. Passing with a drink should always be allowed.
